For my capstone journalism class in Applied Online Journalism, I spent the semester covering K-12 education in Baker County, Florida. Baker County is directly west of Duval County, which is basically all the city of Jacksonville. Before the recession hit, people were moving to Baker County for a quieter, more rural home life a short commute away from Jacksonville. Post-recession, the influx of commuters ground to a halt. The current community is tight-knit. At the first school board meeting I attended, Baker County School Superintendent Sherrie Raulerson recognized a dad as one of her former kindergarten students. It’s that kind of town.
This video is about a new science program at Baker County Elementary.
